Guarantee
As I looked at the typical guarantee expected of breeders, it's simply absurd. It's just as absurd for the new owner as it is for the breeder. I have chosen to take a similar approach of guaranteeing puppies as is done in Europe. Although I have modified the approach, in favor of new owners.
For decades well meaning Americans have inquired with the top European breeders about purchasing a puppy. Ultimately getting around to the guarantee we as Americans have come to expect. The answer from Europeans is aways some form of "my puppies are guaranteed to the end of the drive way". Then they explain the obvious: How can anyone guarantee something out of their control? Health and wellness is a matter of genetics, environment, nutrition, exercise and some luck. Just like with people. No one can guarantee your puppy will turn out healthy with desired drives. All anyone can do is stack the cards in their favor by getting the right puppy from the right litter.
What the typical American guarantee from a breeder is if your dog has a genetic health defect, or dysplasia, you get a replacement puppy. That guarantee usually requires you to surrender you puppy who you've now raised for a year or two to the breeder. As most owners won't do it, the guarantee is not honored. In the case of those breeders that do not require surrender, owners often speak of having to wait long periods for a replacement.
The cost of the puppy is often the smallest investment made in the lives of our dogs. Training is typically far more expensive, as can be veterinary care. The greatest investment of all is the time it takes to raise these little guys. No guarantee can adequately do justice if you have the misfortune of a problem. What you need isn't a guarantee, it's pet health insurance.
Reality
The greatest concern when it comes to guarantees seems to be for hip and elbow dysplasia. In Europe they have a 5% rate of dysplasia, compared to upwards of 35% rate of dysplasia with American bloodlines. So that means with our bloodlines the odds are in your favor but the reality is 1 in 20 puppies (5%) is going to be dysplastic. A breeder giving a guarantee is no different than gambling at a casino, although with better odds. Again, what you need is insurance that covers things like dysplasia.
Limited Guarantee
I've never gone to Vegas, I don't go to casinos and I didn't get involved with breeding to start. There is a risk when purchasing a puppy. Everything may not turn out as hoped for by you or I. What I do guarantee is I am selling you a health puppy at the time of purchase. Just in case my veterinarian misses something, I am giving a 10 day health guarantee. The guarantee is against congenitive conditions such as heart murmurs, and health conditions requireing medical procedures like umbilical hernias. Your puppy must be returned within 24 hours of veterinary exam, and with written documentation from an accredited veterinarian. You will receive an immediate refund.
